Film 05: Getting Started on Adobe Illustrator

So Adobe Illustrator is a popular Adobe application and is nowadays a sought after skill to have in graphic designing, marketing and editing. I am reasonably new to Illustrator myself however I did manage to create that design you see above. It takes time to understand the software and get more confident with the tools on the app. Especially the pen tools, that can be very tricky to get a grasp of but once a person gets comfortable with them; the illustrations will be limitless.

Now a given to get started is by just watching a tutorial on Illustrator however I would recommend just using these tutorials to show you about the place a bit. Get to know your surroundings and tools but a tutorial can leave you bit clueless on where or actually how to get started. A method I used to improve was to begin just doodling to see what I could make and then try to mimic actual images of professional illustrations.

Here was my first illustration I ever did.

Now this is not the worst first try. Just a case of doodling and creating a little world around the doodles. Just be creative and everything from there will be natural and fall into place.

I did this illustration roughly 3 weeks ago which is not a long time ago at all but since this design I have been persistent and continued working on more designs. You may have seen some on my website and even the design on the header but this is my most recent design which I would like to compare this design to.

Now I am no professional and have a lot of things to touch up on but the habit of trying to do an illustration a day is definitely improving me on the app. I gain influence and inspiration from other illustrations to then do my own. So the main answer is to keep practising and use other art to inspire and mould your own vision from this art.
